Prostate Cancer Fact Sheet

Nearly 3,000 New Zealand men are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year.

"To create or enhance an environment to empower men to make informed decisions about diagnosis and treatment for prostate cancer."

  • Nearly 3,000 New Zealand men are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year.
  • 600 men die of prostate cancer each year.
  • Doctors believe they may be able to save up to 300 of these men if they were diagnosed early enough for effective treatment.
  • At this time it is not known what causes prostate cancer.
  • In its early stages prostate cancer does not usually exhibit symptoms therefore men may have it but not know.
  • When symptoms do appear, it is frequently too late for effective treatment.
  • Once prostate cancer moves outside the prostate there is no cure.
  • This means there is one window of opportunity to potentially cure this disease, diagnose it and treat it while it is within the prostate.
  • The Prostate Cancer Foundation recommends that men have an annual check-up from the age of 50.
  • There is a strong genetic link with prostate cancer.  Those with a history of the disease in their family should start check-ups from the age of 40.
  • There are a number of treatment options:  surgery, radiotherapy, cryotherapy, hormone treatment, watchful waiting. New treatments are being developed.
  • There are possible side effects from current treatment options.   Because of these some men may choose not to be treated.

The Prostate Cancer Foundation of New Zealand receives no funding from any source other than from its members, a sponsor and what it can raise in promotions such as Movember.
